Grail Romances in Translation in Celtic and Scandinavian Languages (Bangor, 3-4 November 2025)

Grail Romances in Translation in Celtic and Scandinavian Languages: An Epistemological Approach to Textual History is a conference held at the Centre for Arthurian Studies, Bangor University on 3-4 November 2025 and online (registration required at this link).

This event represents the culmination of an international project led by Dr. Hélène Bouget (Centre de Recherche Bretonne et Celtique, UBO, Brest), Dr Ceridwen Lloyd-Morgan FLSW (olim National Library of Wales), Prof. Hélène Tétrel (Université de Rouen Normandie), in collaboration with Prof. Raluca Radulescu FLSW (Centre for Arthurian Studies, Bangor University).

The project, whose working languages are French and English, focuses on the dissemination and reception of Old French Grail romances in medieval Celtic and Scandinavian language communities, with a strong focus on methodological and epistemological issues.

The first colloquium, held in Rouen in November 2024, focused on translations/adaptations of Chrétien de Troyes’s late-twelfth-century verse romance Le Conte du Graal.

The forthcoming colloquium represents the UK strand of the project and will focus on texts derived from two early-thirteenth century prose romances, La Quête du Saint Graal and Perlesvaus, including Welsh, Irish and English adaptations. Speakers include the organisers, as well as Keith Busby, Erich Poppe, and a number of ECRs from our society.
